The Angels Among Us
Hi Friend!
“I believe there are angels among us, sent down to us from somewhere up above. They come to you and me in our darkest hours, to show us how to live, to teach us how to give, to guide us with a light of love.” Helen Keller
I love this quote and I can't help but sing it to the tune from the Alabama song that uses these beautiful words, Angels Among Us. Like they say in this song I believe there are angels among us. Some of those angels may be heavenly angels, I don't think we truly even know how much influence they really do have in our lives. Even Jesus Christ had angels come to him when he was suffering in the garden of gethsemane as shown in Luke 22:42 "...Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him." He still had to do it all on his own but an angel came to just be with him. How powerful is this reminder that we all need angels to sometimes be there with us and strengthen us in our times of trial and tribulation?
I believe there are other kinds of angels in our lives and they are what I call earthly angels. President Kimball once said, “God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs.” I believe that this is very true. This is how I like to view my earthly angels.
Here are some simple examples of angels that I have found in my life. After my Husband graduated college he got an engineering job in Seattle so we picked up our family and moved there. We literally knew no one. We hadn't picked out a home to live in and we had no idea what the area even looked like. We got on an airplane with 2 kids and 12 bags, 4 carry on and 8 checked bags. I knew I had to live out of just those bags for at least a month so I had to come prepared. When we started out on our flight we saw a woman who we had gone to church with and started talking to her. We were explaining our circumstance to her and it was crazy how she just offered to help. She said she would be happy to help us get our bags to our hotel. It was truly a miracle in my eyes. There was no way I was going to be able to fit all our bags in the rental we had. She helped us with our bags, and we were able to get to our extended stay hotel without splitting up and me being stuck at the airport just waiting for Zach to get back. That day she was the angel in our lives that I was so grateful for, and I felt like God helped her be on the exact flight we needed at the exact time we needed her to be.
There were several other angels that I met while living in Washington. I met angels who showed me how to grieve, when a couple of them lost sweet little babies way too young. I found angels who invited me to parks to get to know other women in the area. I found angels who asked me to come make jam with them. I found angels who were willing to watch my children. I found angels who exercised with me and whose teenage children watched my toddlers so we could run without them. I found angels who were willing to go camping with us and enjoy exploring with us. Truly we were so blessed and fortunate to live in such a place as that. This is the kind of environment I hope to raise my kids in. A place where people look out for one another and love one another unconditionally.
I believe we can be angels for others in need. I believe that it doesn't take some major act of kindness, it takes showing up for someone when they need it. It means showing Christlike love to those who need his guidance and love, which I can be all of us. I hope this holiday we can find ways to serve as Jesus served and be angels to those who need us.
